Garrett Oliver thinks Vietnam makes the worst beer...
Gothamist: What's the worst beer out there?
Garrett Oliver: The worst beer out there?
Gothamist: If you could wave your hand and make one beer disappear from the face of the planet?
Garrett Oliver: That's an interesting question. I had a Vietnamese beer a few years ago that was called Saigon and it was just, it was really, really ghastly. I didn't remember—though I do realize that beers existed that still tasted quite that bad—it reminded me of one that I had in East Germany in the mid-1980s, when there was an East Berlin. I drank a beer when I spent a day in East Berlin, and I thought, "Boy, Communism is certainly bad but I didn't know it was so bad that it could even make Germans produce terrible beer." And it had. I don't know whether Vietnam is still considered particularly Communist, but apparently it hasn't done anything to their beer industry anyway.

Money is too valuable to waste...
Did you know the average monthly salary in Vietnam is only $5 more than the cost of that chicken wire basket? They still use those baskets here. Except the ones in Vietnam, unlike the shabby vintage one pictured below, can hold a few hundred pounds of pottery and cost about a 100th of the price.

My friends, Tabitha and Nathan, write my favorite blog about Hanoi. They also offered an explanation for the Tet Monsters, which it turns out are offerings to the Kitchen God.
